Email Storage Management FAQ
Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you can't find the answer to your question here, FAQs for legal discovery and compliance are also available.
Which email platform does Fortiva support?
The Fortiva solution integrates with Active Directory® and Microsoft® Exchange, enabling IT staff to easily manage permissions and fully control employee access to archived data. Customers must be running Microsoft Exchange 2000, 2003 or 2007 with Active Directory Server to take advantage of the Fortiva solution.

Where does the archived data reside?
All customer data is hosted on the state-of-the-art Fortiva Network, a highly secure, reliable and scaleable infrastructure based on a distributed network and grid storage architecture.
After being encrypted at the customer site, data is sent to the Fortiva Network, made up of servers, storage and network infrastructure located in geographically diverse datacenters and managed by Fortiva. This state-of-the-art network provides complete protection of electronic messages through multiple levels of security, with data hosted on a highly secure, reliable and scaleable infrastructure based on a distributed network and storage architecture. How does the Fortiva email archiving process impact my Exchange Server load?
According to Microsoft, enabling journaling adds about 15% to the load on the Exchange server. Retrieving the messages from the journal is similar to having an additional user accessing their own mailbox, albeit a highly active user. All told, you can expect to see a 20% increase in load on your Exchange server with Fortiva in place (as compared to a system without journaling enabled).
With all of the mail archived, however, Fortiva customers find it easier to enforce tighter restrictions on how much mail or how long mail can be stored within users' mailboxes. As Exchange performance is closely tied to the size of the message stores, the performance gains from tighter restrictions can easily exceed the load created from the journaling/archiving process.

Does the Fortiva email archiving process impact my bandwidth requirements?
Depending on how much email is generated within your organization, there may be a slight increase in your outbound corporate traffic. However, the Fortiva Appliance provides you with the capability to control when email is sent to the Fortiva Network so you can schedule the additional outbound traffic for times when your business has low bandwidth demands.
Hide answer >
Does Fortiva require schema changes in Active Directory?
No. To support permissions, Fortiva looks for standard Active Directory groups with predefined names, such as "Fortiva Archive Search Users". Users are granted access to various features simply by adding them (or a group that they belong to) to one of these groups.

Can Fortiva import end-users' PST files?
Yes. Fortiva can import PST files directly to the archive while providing end user access to that data. As a result, customers can eliminate PST files, and in turn eliminate the storage impact of maintaining this data on corporate server storage and end user machines.
Hide answer >
Can end-users access archived email remotely?
Yes. Fortiva provides a proxy that allows end users to search their archived email via Outlook or Outlook Web Access. Stubbed attachments can also be accessed via Outlook or Outlook Web Access.
